Wayne Rooney: 'England would have beaten Portugal in 2006 had I stayed on'

England captain Wayne Rooney believes that the Three Lions would have defeated Portugal in the 2006 World Cup quarter-finals had he not been sent off.

England captain Wayne Rooney has claimed that the Three Lions would have defeated Portugal in the 2006 World Cup had he not been sent off.

The 29-year-old was shown a red card for stamping on Ricardo Carvalho in the Gelsenkirchen quarter-final clash, with the Iberian nation advancing to the semi-finals after winning the game on penalties.

Rooney told BBC Sport: "I still believe to this day that if I had stayed on [against Portugal] we would have won the game.

"We could have won the game with 10 men so that was really frustrating for me."

Rooney will win his 100th England cap should he play against Slovenia in Saturday evening's Euro 2016 Group D qualifier.
