With Wayne Rooney resting with a hamstring injury, the Chelsea defender took the armband for the 2-0 win over Estonia in a Euro 2016 qualifier at Wembley this evening.
The 29-year-old told ITV Sport: "I'm very pleased. For the first time captaining my country, you want it to go well.
"In the first half we had to be patient but we got our goal and thankfully we kept the run going. The performance was good. Everyone worked hard and we deserved the result."
