Chelsea news: Liam Delap being targeted for shock international switch

Chelsea forward Delap being targeted for shock international switch

Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson is bidding to convince Chelsea forward Liam Delap to switch his international allegiances.

Having lost to Czech Republic on penalties last week, Republic of Ireland have missed out on a place at the 2026 World Cup.

As a result, they have a UEFA Nations League campaign to come from September onwards, before they bid to qualify for Euro 2028.

Despite making progress under Hallgrimsson, talkSPORT reports that Republic of Ireland want to add Delap to their selection options.

Hallgrimsson, O'Shea speak on Delap situation

While Delap represented England from Under-15 to Under-21 level, there is currently little prospect of him earning a call-up to England's senior squad.

However, Delap's grandparents are from Ireland, and his father, Rory Delap, switched allegiances from England to earn 11 caps for Republic of Ireland between 1998 and 2004.

As quoted by talkSPORT, Hallgrimsson and assistant John O'Shea have both commented on the possibility of tempting Delap to the squad.

Hallgrimsson said: "It’s a decision that is still just his.

“He hasn’t played for England and it doesn’t look like he is going to the World Cup, it looks like he is far away from that."

O'Shea added: "It’s in Liam’s corner, as they say. Let’s wait and see."

Delap international switch makes sense

With Harry Kane entering veteran status, England will need to plan for an eventual successor for the Three Lions number nine.

At this point in time, though, Delap is not under consideration for an international call-up, a consequence of just two goals being scored in 27 Premier League and Champions League appearances in 2025-26.

Delap may only become third choice for Republic of Ireland when everyone is fit, with Troy Parrott and Evan Ferguson the top two in the pecking order.

Nevertheless, also alongside Adam Idah, Delap would challenge for a starting spot and give Hallgrimsson a further attacking option.
