Belgium's Eden Hazard confirms hamstring injury

Eden Hazard confirms hamstring injury

Belgium attacker Eden Hazard has confirmed he sustained a hamstring injury during the national side's 1-0 victory over Portugal in Euro 2020.

The Real Madrid winger has struggled with injuries since arriving at the Bernabeu from Chelsea in 2019, and only managed 14 La Liga appearances for Los Blancos last season.

Roberto Martinez has managed Hazard's game time during this summer's tournament by not starting him in the first two group games, but he was forced off the pitch in Seville on Sunday in the closing stages.

The 30-year-old confirmed his injury to reporters after the game: "I hurt myself, I felt something in the hamstring. I think I have something, we'll see tomorrow. We will analyse the injury well, we will see the extent afterwards. As captain, I will stay with the group because I have an important role to play."

Belgium's injury concerns ahead of their quarter-final tie against Italy on Friday extend beyond Hazard, as Kevin De Bruyne was also substituted off just after half-time with an ankle problem.

The Belgium captain's brother Thorgan Hazard was the national hero on the weekend as it was his strike that sealed the win against the reigning European champions.
