BATE Borisov have nudged ahead of Bayer Leverkusen in their Champions League Group E contest with the fastest goal of the competition so far.

It was the ideal start for BATE as Mikhail Gordeichuk found the back of the net in the first 80 seconds of the game, but it was largely down to some poor goalkeeping from Bernd Leno.

Gordeichuk managed to cut inside before unleashing a shot, which was sent straight to Leno, who fluffed his hold and the ball trickled through his legs.

As the half progressed, Leverkusen had plenty of time on the ball, but they struggled to make it count in the final third as BATE managed to hold off their advances.

Admir Mehmedi tried to make things happen for the visitors as he charged at BATE's defence after cutting in from the right, but his pass in for Javier Hernandez was poor.

It became a frustrating game for Leverkusen as they fell short of ideas and struggled to provide the service to Hernandez up top, but Jonathan Tah showed his quality at times, particularly when he cut out a through-ball from Alexandr Hleb aimed at Dzmitry Mozolevski.

The German side struggled to find their feet as the likes of Karim Bellarabi and Hernandez wasted chances when in the final third, and BATE seemed content to sit back until the half-time whistle.

Should Roma get beaten by Barcelona later tonight, then the winner between this match will move into the second qualification spot ahead of the final round of fixtures.
