Athletic Bilbao register home win

Ten-man Athletic Bilbao get the better of Sevilla 2-1 at home, thanks to first-half goals from Oscar de Marcos and Markel Susaeta.

Athletic Bilbao have defeated Sevilla 2-1 at home in La Liga despite playing the last 15 minutes at San Mames with 10 men.

The Basque giants made the breakthrough in an entertaining first-half when Oscar De Marcos slotted home Jon Aurtenetxe's cross from close range in the 27th minute.

Four minutes later Carlos Gurpegi could have doubled Bilbao's advantage had he managed to keep his header from an Andoni Iraola delivery on target.

The hosts scored their second goal of the match in the first minute of injury time of the first half, Markel Susaeta turning in Aritz Aduriz's headed pass with his right foot from the centre of the box.

However, Sevilla came back strongly in the second half and started to dominate proceedings right from the beginning.

Federico Fazio headed just high over the Bilbao crossbar from a Jose Antonio Reyes delivery in the 55th minute, and then Baba forced Gorka Iraizoz into making a save.

Baba tested Iraizoz again in the 70th minute and moments later so did Alvaro Negredo.

Sevilla were given a lifeline on 76 minutes when Ander Herrera was sent off for a second bookable offence, and a minute later Iraola conceded a penalty by handling the ball inside the Bilbao area.

Negredo stepped up to take the spot kick and made no mistake from 12 yards.

The Spanish striker went close to restoring parity for Sevilla twice in the final 10 minutes and Emir Spahic too troubled Iraizoz, but Marcelo Bielsa's side held on for maximum points.
