Newcastle United target James Collins

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is looking to boost his defensive ranks by signing Aston Villa's James Collins, according to The People.

The 28-year-old recently agreed a new deal at Villa Park but is believed to be open to a move away from the club.

The Magpies are currently short of defenders following an injury that has ruled Steven Taylor out for the season.

Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill is also monitoring Collins's availability.
