Patrick Vieira plays down the prospect of becoming Arsenal's next permanent manager.

Patrick Vieira has played down the prospect of becoming Arsenal's next permanent manager.

The club has commenced its search for a new boss following last month's decision to sack Unai Emery, who had gone seven games without a victory.

Reports have suggested that Vieira, who spent nine years at Arsenal and captained the club, was the frontrunner for the role.

Speaking on the subject of taking over at Arsenal, Vieira told Canal+: "You can never ignore a club where you've spent nine years.

"But, honestly, I'm focused on this project at Nice, I feel very good here. It's a very exciting project. I've always said that I'm very happy in Nice. We're all working to move the club forward and there is potential."

Due to budget restrictions, Arsenal are said to be unlikely to secure an elite manager and will instead look to make an in-house appointment.

Mikel Arteta, currently serving as Pep Guardiola's assistant at Manchester City, has also been mentioned as a potential candidate for the role.
