Arsenal in talks with Per Mertesacker

Arsenal are in talks with Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker over a potential transfer, according to reports.

Manager Arsene Wenger is eyeing the 26-year-old, who is currently captain of the Bundesliga side, to strengthen his club following their 8-2 defeat to Manchester United last weekend.

The 6ft 6in centre-back has a year to run on his current contract.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are on the verge of signing Brazilian defender Andre Santos from Fenerbahce.
