Sheffield United vs. Arsenal: Head-to-head record and past meetings

Ahead of Monday's Premier League clash between Sheff Utd and Arsenal, Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two clubs.

Bramall Lane is the venue for the closing fixture of Premier League gameweek 27, as basement team Sheffield United seek a shock scalp over title-chasing Arsenal on Monday evening.

Following the events of the weekend, Chris Wilder's men remain doomed to return to the Championship as they lie 11 points adrift of safety in 20th place, although Burnley are only above them on goal difference.

Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta's third-placed troops have a four-point gap to make up to Manchester City and five-point disadvantage to make up to leaders Liverpool, although they travel north with a perfect record of six wins from six Premier League fixtures in 2024.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 119
Sheff Utd wins: 40
Draws: 27
Arsenal wins: 52

Monday's match - a mismatch on paper - will mark the 120th meeting between Sheffield United and Arsenal across all competitions, and while the Gunners lead the head-to-head record as expected, it is not so one-sided as one may assume.

Indeed, Arsenal have claimed 52 victories from their previous 119 contests against the Blades, who in turn have been victorious on 40 occasions, and another 27 battles between the two teams have ended all square.

The vast majority of Sheffield United's successes in this fixture came during the 20th century, though, and Arsenal have unsurprisingly dominated this fixture in recent times, winning each of their last four games against the Premier League's cellar dwellers.

During their most recent showdown at the Emirates Stadium on October 28, Sheffield United experienced a Halloween fright in a 5-0 drubbing, where Eddie Nketiah struck his first Premier League hat-trick and Takehiro Tomiyasu finally opened his Arsenal account on a near-perfect afternoon for Arteta's men.

Before spending two years in the Championship doldrums, Sheffield United were also condemned to a pair of defeats against Arsenal behind closed doors in 2020-21, going down 2-1 in North London before being bested 3-0 at home in April 2021, which interestingly marked the first time that they had ever lost a Premier League match to the Gunners at Bramall Lane.

Arteta and co also possess fond knockout memories at Sheffield United's home, where Dani Ceballos was the hero in a 2-1 FA Cup quarter-final win in the 2019-20 season, before the Gunners won their record-extending 14th honour in the tournament.

However, Arsenal failed to win either of their top-flight meetings with Wilder's side that year - losing 1-0 away from home under Unai Emery thanks to Lys Mousset's effort - a result which extended their winless Premier League sequence at Bramall Lane to six games after an identical defeat in December 2006.

The title-chasing visitors have now developed a taste for success on Sheffield United territory, though, and should they emerge triumphant from Monday night's fixture, it will mark the first time in their history that they have won three away games on the trot against the Blades.
