Michael van Gerwen safely through to World Grand Prix quarter-finals

Michael van Gerwen is through to the quarter-finals of the World Grand Prix with a straight-sets win over James Wilson.

Michael van Gerwen has earned his place in the World Grand Prix quarter-finals after easing past James Wilson.

Wilson stunned the world number one by taking out 156 in the first leg but Van Gerwen won nine of the next 11 legs to complete a 3-0 victory.

The Dutchman will face Simon Whitlock in the last eight after the Australian thrower edged past Alan Norris in arguably the best-ever finish to a PDC match.

Whitlock found himself 2-1 down in the final set before taking the contest to a last-leg decider courtesy of a 180 and a 150 checkout.

In the final leg, Whitlock followed a 152 start with a 180 and 129 before hitting double 20 at the first time of asking to end the clash with 16 perfect darts.

Dave Chisnall also booked his spot in the next round with a 3-1 win over Brendan Dolan, and he will play Daryl Gurney for a place in the semi-finals after the Northern Irishman beat Steve West 3-0.
