Michael van Gerwen sorry to eliminate "best mate" Vincent van der Voort

World number one Michael van Gerwen says that he defeated "best mate" Vincent van der Voort with a heavy heart at the World Grand Prix in Dublin.

Michael van Gerwen has revealed that he was conflicted over eliminating his "best mate" Vincent van der Voort from the World Grand Prix.

The world number one barely broke sweat as he cruised into the second round of the tournament after beating his Dutch compatriot 2-0 in sets in Dublin last night.

Consequently, the 25-year-old admits that beating Van der Voort - who was best man at Van Gerwen's wedding - left him disappointed.

"It's not really a nice thing to do," he told Sky Sports News. "He's a very good friend of me and it's a big thing for both of us. It's always very difficult to play my best mate."

The 2012 champion will face Dean Winstanley in the next round.
