Thornton shocks Taylor in Bolton final

World number 34 Robert Thornton has been crowned UK Open champion after thrashing Phil Taylor in the final.

The Scot sealed the 10-5 victory with a 121 finish on the bull at Bolton Wanderers' Reebok Stadium.

Thornton hit six maximums, compared to Taylor's three, and converted 61 percent of his shots at a double.

Meanwhile, Taylor missed 23 darts at doubles and had a conversion rate of only 18 percent.

Thornton reached the final with hard-fought wins over Wes Newton and Dave Chisnall earlier in the day, while Taylor cruised past Terry Jenkins and Denis Ovens.

Thornton began the tournament as a 250-1 outsider.
