World champion Adrian Lewis and world number three James Wade have both fallen to defeat in the first round of the PDC European Championship.

Lewis, who was looking to close the gap on world number one Phil Taylor in the PDC Order of Merit, was whitewashed 6-0 by fellow Stoke player Ian White.

Former World Matchplay champion Colin Lloyd averaged over 97 as he recorded a 6-3 victory over Wade.

Raymond van Barneveld produced a scintillating performance to record a 113 average and defeat Terry Jenkins 6-1.

He will now play Michael van Gerwen, who withstood a comeback from Andy Smith to win 6-5.

Simon Whitlock and Kim Huybrechts also progressed to the second round with wins over Mark Walsh and Vincent van der Voort respectively.
