Dutch cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten in intensive care after Rio crash

Dutch cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten is reportedly in intensive care with concussion and three cracks in her spine following her crash in the Olympic road race.

Netherlands cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten has reportedly been placed in intensive care following a crash in the women's road race at the Rio Olympics.

Van Vleuten was leading the race heading into the treacherous final descent, which also saw two leaders and Great Britain's Geraint Thomas crash in the men's race yesterday.

Rain started falling as the riders sped down, and Van Vleuten suffered a horrific crash while in pole position before being taken to hospital.

Initial reports suggested that she was conscious and responsive in hospital, but it has now been reported that the Dutchwoman has concussion and three cracks in her spine.

Van Vleuten's compatriot Anna van der Breggen went on to claim gold in the race, while Team GB's Lizzie Armitstead finished fifth.
