Dutch cyclist Wouter Wippert expects tough race

Dutch cyclist Wouter Wippert admits that the course for the men's road race at the European Games will make for a "tough race".

Dutch cyclist Wouter Wippert has said that he is expecting the men's road race at the European Games in Baku to be "tough".

The sprint specialist, who rides for Australian team Drapac, had arrived in Azerbaijan just days after finishing the Tour of Korea, in which he won two stages.

The 24-year-old told reporters: "It's going to be a tough race, and I'm not the only one who thinks so.

"It's a nasty climb and on the cobblestone section before the climb the bunch will be spread out, so if you're too far behind there you'll start the climb at the back, and then it's going to be tough to get back in front.

"We haven't had a team meeting yet, so we don't exactly know [what the Dutch team's tactics will be]. It's important to keep everything together because on this course it's not easy to close big gaps."

Wippert is one of five Dutch cyclists taking part in the race.
