Katy Marchant misses out on time trial medal

Australia win gold and silver in the women's 500m time trial at the Commonwealth Games as England's Katy Marchant misses out on a medal.

Team England's Katy Marchant has missed out on a medal in the women's 500m time trial as Australia dominated the event at the Anna Meares Velodrome this evening.

Marchant was last up and had the chance to deny the host nation another cycling gold, but she only managed sixth place as England missed out on the podium altogether.

Lauren Bate finished one place better off in fifth, but the race belonged to Australia as home favourites Kaarle McCulloch and Stephanie Morton claimed gold and silver respectively.

McCulloch's personal-best ride of 33.583 was enough to earn her a second gold medal and third overall of the Games following her triumph in the women's team sprint and bronze medal-winning performance in the sprint event.

The result was McCulloch's first individual gold medal, and she was joined on the podium by compatriot Morton, who added a silver medal to the golds she has already won in the sprint and team sprint.

New Zealand's Emma Cumming picked up bronze, meanwhile, but it was all eyes on McCulloch as the 30-year-old - a silver medallist in the event eight years ago - continued Australia's run of winning time trial gold in each of the last five Games.
