Jason Kenny admits "schoolboy" error

Team England rider Jason Kenny tells Sports Mole that he made a "schoolboy" error in his gold-medal race with Sam Webster at the Commonwealth Games today.

Team England cyclist Jason Kenny has admitted that he made a "schoolboy" error during his gold-medal race against Sam Webster at the Commonwealth Games today.

Kenny progressed to the final despite a tough day of qualifying on Thursday, but got off to a shaky start as New Zealand's Webster cruised to victory in the first race.

The 26-year-old threw up a number of times during a tough day of racing, but still managed to force a decider in the final, which Webster won to claim the gold.

When asked what he did differently to his disappointing displays yesterday, Kenny told Sports Mole: "Racing is different anyway. By the time you get to the second day we've slept on it, and we had the team sprint in the middle as well, so it's just how you pull up after all that. You've got a bit of work in your legs, and it kind of evens it out a little bit.

"I think the priority is not to let your legs and the way you feel rule over your head and what you should be doing. I think the first one in the final, that's what happened really. I wasn't feeling great and I was a bit lethargic, and he took advantage of that. He just steamrollered me with a lap to go, and there was nothing I could do about that. That was schoolboy really, that was a real novice thing to let happen to me.

"I just felt horrendous after the semi-final, but after we had come down and I'd thrown up a bit more to get myself back together then we got back up and proved that we've got the legs to beat him if we do it right. It's just keeping it together really - it's still doing the right things when everyone is feeling tired."

Kenny has won two silver medals at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome so far this summer.
