South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis will continue to bat in the second Test against Australia with a runner but will miss out on the final Test in Perth because of a hamstring injury.

South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis has been told that he can bat again in the second Test but will have to miss out on the third Test in Australia after picking up a hamstring injury.

The 37-year-old aggravated his hamstring on the first day in Adelaide and was moved down to nine in the batting order.

The veteran managed to notch 58 runs with the aid of a runner to ensure the tourists avoided the follow-on and he may have to do the same in the second innings.

"His initial hamstring strain had responded very well, so much so that he was almost symptom free," team manager Mohammed Moosajee said. "We knew he would always be able to bat. The challenge was what's going to happen when he runs.

"It's safe to say he's probably aggravated his injury by running and batting. He's still probably going to have to bat in the second innings.

"He will bat in the second innings but it's unlikely he'll respond in time to be fit to take his place in the Perth Test match because of the quick three-day turnaround."

South Africa responded at the end of the third day to leave Australia on 111-5.
