England defeat Pakistan by 44 runs as match is abandoned

England take a 1-0 series lead over Pakistan as the weather intervenes.

England have taken a 1-0 lead in their Test series against Pakistan after seeing off their opponents by 44 runs.

The match was eventually rained off, but the hosts were awarded the win via the DLS method.

Jason Roy made 65 and Joe Root 61 in a second-wicket stand of 89 before the adverse weather intervened, cutting England's target to 252 from 48 overs.

Pakistan clung on at 260-6 when an earlier rain break was called, despite Azhar Ali returning an 82 and Sarfraz Ahmed 55, but ended the day on 34.3 overs.

The victory gives England a 10-8 lead in the 'Super Series' ahead of the second Test in the five-match series at Lord's on Saturday.
