A knock of 175 from Chris Gayle sees the West Indian break the record for the number of runs in a Twenty20 encounter.

West Indian all-rounder Chris Gayle scored a record 175 runs during an Indian Premier League fixture in Bangalore this afternoon.

The 33-year-old, who was playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore against the Pune Warriors, reached that total from just 66 deliveries.

His innings included 30 boundaries (13 fours and 17 sixes), while he also made the quickest century in the T20 history (30 balls).

The previous individual record for a top innings was 158 runs, which had been held by New Zealander Brendon McCullum since 2008 when he was playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

"I'm lost for words, but it's just one of those days. It's a good wicket and the ball was coming right out of the middle of the bat," said Gayle.

Gayle's unbeaten contribution helped the Challengers to a total of 263 runs from their allotted 20 overs, which again is a record. The previous holders had been Sri Lanka, who scored 260 against Kenya.
