NZ take control against Sri Lanka

New Zealand ended the first day of their first Test with Sri Lanka in control as Brendon McCullum scored 195 runs to leave the Black Caps 429-7 at the close.

McCullum put on a masterclass at the new, redeveloped Hagley Oval, with teammates James Neesham (85) and Kane Williamson (54) both reaching their half-centuries.

Sri Lanka looked in control early on in the match, as they reduced the hosts to 60-2 and then 80-3 but failed to capitalise on their impressive start.

It was McCullum that stole the show, however, as his near double-century came off only 134 balls, scoring 18 fours and 11 sixes.

The batsman even broke his own record for fastest Test century by a New Zealander and ultimately helped put the hosts in full control against Sri Lanka.
