England fail to truly recover after slipping to 8-5 in Adelaide as Australia profit to open up a 3-1 lead in the one-day international series.

Australia profited from a poor start by England to win Friday's fourth one-day international in Adelaide by three wickets.

Travis Head hit 96 for the hosts after themselves making a shaky start to their innings, while Shaun Marsh was the Aussies' next-highest scorer on 32.

England fell to 8-5 at one point but slowly recovered through Chris Woakes, who reached 78 before being caught by Glenn Maxwell.

Jason Roy (0), Alex Hales (3), Jonny Bairstow (0), Joe Root (0) and Jos Butler (0) were all sent packing by the eighth over, as the tourists reached 196 all out.

That effectively cost England any chance of winning and, despite Woakes piling on some runs, Head came close to a ton to help Australia reduce the series deficit to 3-1 ahead of the final ODI in Perth on Sunday.
