Australia's total too much for England to chase down

Australia beat England by 88 runs in the second one-day international at Old Trafford to take a 1-0 series lead.

Australia have beaten England by 88 runs in the second one-day international at Old Trafford.

The visitors were put into bat first and made a big score of 315-7, thanks to a century from skipper Michael Clarke.

In contrast, England struggled at the crease and were bowled out for 227 with 5.4 overs remaining as the Aussies took a 1-0 lead in the series after the first match was rained off.

Clarke's 105 was a highlight for the Aussies, who also had Aaron Finch (45), Shane Watson (38) and George Bailey (82) make impressive knocks.

Steven Finn, Boyd Rankin and Ravi Bopara all ended with two wickets apiece for the hosts.

Only four players made it into double figures with the bat for England as Kevin Pietersen (60), Eoin Morgan (54), Jos Buttler (75) and Steven Finn (16) toiled in vain.

The tourists' leading wicket-takers were Clint McKay (3-47) and Mitchell Johnson (2-36).

The third match of the five-game series takes place in Birmingham on Wednesday.
