England to monitor Zafar Ansari injury ahead of Pakistan series

England will monitor Zafar Ansari after the Surrey youngster suffered an open dislocation of his thumb, hours after earning a first international call-up.

Zafar Ansari has suffered an open dislocation of his left thumb and will miss Surrey's Royal London One-Day Cup final against Gloucestershire on Saturday.

The 23-year-old will also be monitored before England make a decision about whether to take him on the tour to the United Arab Emirates, where the Three Lions take on Pakistan.

On Tuesday morning, Ansari had earned his first call-up to the national team ahead of their winter series and had even been touted as a possible opening batsman to replace the omitted Adam Lyth.

After scoring 99 in the first innings of Surrey's County Championship game with Lancashire at Old Trafford, Ansari went down awkwardly after dropping Ashwell Prince at cover point. He was immediately taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a dislocated thumb.

England's first Test against Pakistan starts on October 13.
