Stuart Broad took six wickets as England got off to an excellent start on day one of the first Test against the West Indies at Lord's.

The inexperienced tourists put up little resistance as they ended the day on 243-9.

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl, England made an early breakthrough when Kieran Powell was bowled by Jimmy Anderson for five.

Anderson was at it again soon after when he bowled Kirk Edwards lbw for one, but Adrian Barath managed to dig his heels in as the Windies were 83-2 at lunch.

However, the opener was out for 42 after the break when he was caught by Anderson off the bowling of Broad.

The tourists' fourth wicket went down in comical fashion as Darren Bravo was run out for 29 after some haphazard fielding from the hosts to make the score 100-4.

Meanwhile, Shivnarine Chanderpaul gave the West Indies some hope as a knock of 42 moved his side onto 146-4 at tea.

Marlon Samuels was Broad's second victim having made 34, while Denesh Ramdin made a disappointing score of six before he was caught by Strauss off Broad.

Darren Sammy (17) and Kemar Roach (6) both then fell as Broad continued his assault on West Indian batting lineup.

Matt Prior pulled off a diving catch at the end of the day to give Broad his sixth wicket at the expense of Fidel Edwards for two.
