Sir Ian Botham hails "magnificent" Ben Stokes

Sir Ian Botham heaps praise on Ben Stokes after the all-rounder broke the English record for the quickest Test double-century during the second Test against South Africa.

Sir Ian Botham has heaped praise on Ben Stokes after the all-rounder's record innings put England in command of the second Test against South Africa.

Stokes broke Botham's national record for the fastest Test double-century in Cape Town, reaching the landmark from 163 balls - 57 fewer than Botham's previous record set against India in 1982.

Only one player in the history of Test cricket has ever reached 200 in fewer deliveries, and Botham was quick to hail the "magnificent" innings.

"It was magnificent. Ben Stokes is box office," he told Sky Sports News.

"We knew he'd got it, and this is the tip of the iceberg. He'll get it wrong once in a while but he is a guy that wins matches, and they don't come along very often.

"[You feel like] you're just king of the castle. No boundary's big enough, no bowler's quick enough, it really is a moment to enjoy."

Stokes was eventually run out for 258 as England declared on 629-6, while South Africa ended the day on 141-2 as they attempted to fight back.
