Michael Vaughan urges England to pick Adil Rashid

Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes that Adil Rashid deserves the opportunity to make his Test debut in The Ashes.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has claimed that Adil Rashid deserves to be given a chance in this summer's Ashes series.

Yorkshire leg-spinner Rashid played a key role in the limited-overs success against New Zealand, but he was not picked for the training camp in Spain as England continue their preparations for the first Test against Australia, which begins in Cardiff next Wednesday.

Vaughan is hopeful that Rashid remains in the thoughts of coach Trevor Bayliss, captain Alastair Cook and the England selectors, and he has backed the 27-year-old to impress should he make his Test debut.

"With the way that he bowls and the way England have really struggled to get rid of tails, it's something different that England might surprise Australia with," Vaughan is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.

"I wouldn't expect him to whip through the top order in the first innings, but with careful management and careful field settings he certainly can play a big part.

"When you go into an Ashes series you have to be so confident in your own ability and you have to be on top of that confidence level to compete."

Moeen Ali is expected to keep his place when the squad for the first Test is revealed on Wednesday.
