Mark Wood: 'I may need ankle operation'

England bowler Mark Wood reveals that he may need an operation to repair a long-standing ankle problem.

England bowler Mark Wood has revealed that he may need to have surgery to repair a long-standing ankle injury.

The Durham seamer has battled the problem since breaking into the England team earlier in the year and he was forced to miss the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston due to fitness concerns.

Wood returned to replace James Anderson in the fourth Test, but he admits that the issue is likely to require an operation in the future.

"Long-term, I think the ankle problem that I've got may need some work done to it," the 25-year-old told reporters ahead of the fifth Test at The Oval. "I've never had an operation yet but that might be the case.

"Everyone saw that at Lord's I struggled a bit so I might have to have that operation done."

Wood is expected to miss out on Thursday if England decide to recall Anderson, who picked up a side injury at Edgbaston.
