Australia have confirmed that Peter Siddle will play no part in the second Test against New Zealand, which gets underway in Christchurch on Friday.
The bowler has been struck down by a long-standing back injury that was aggravated towards the end of the recent innings and 52-run victory over the Kiwis.
"Peter experienced some discomfort in his back during the first Test in Wellington and has not recovered sufficiently enough to play the Test," said Australia physio David Beakley.
"At this stage, the plan is for him to stay with the squad in Christchurch for the remainder of the tour before returning to Melbourne for further investigation."
It is expected that James Pattinson will replace the 31-year-old.
