Australia lose Dave Warner with the last ball before lunch to leave the home side on 97-2 on day one of the first Test against Sri Lanka.

Australia have lost two wickets cheaply before lunch on day one of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Hobart.

A revamped top order got off to a shaky start when Ed Cowan was dismissed for four after leaning back on a Chanaka Welegedara delivery, presenting Shaminda Eranga with an easy catch.

Phil Hughes and Dave Warner helped restore confidence with an assured partnership, putting on a second-wicket stand of 79 runs which fell in the final ball before lunch.

A lack of communication between the pair saw Hughes run after Angelo Matthews slipped over as he collected the ball.

Warner reacted too late and was a sitting duck as Matthews regained his composure to run the opener out on 57 runs.

Hughes will be partnered with Shane Watson when play resumes, with the home side on 97-2.
