The hosts reached tea on day four on 306-4 in reply to the Proteas' first-innings total of 450.

Cowan, who was dropped by Dale Steyn on 123, made 136 before becoming the only the wicket to fall in the opening two sessions at the Gabba when he was unfortunately run out.

Captain Michael Clarke, who remains at the crease, has contributed 126 runs.
