Australia complete Ashes whitewash over England

Australia beat England by 281 runs in Sydney to complete a 5-0 Ashes whitewash Down Under.

Australia have romped to a 5-0 Ashes whitewash over England thanks to a 281-run victory in Sydney.

The hosts needed another seven wickets after tea on day three at the SCG to repeat their feat of 2006-07, when Ricky Ponting led them to a clean sweep over Andrew Flintoff's side.

Michael Carberry (43) and Gary Ballance resumed the final session with the tourists 87-3, but the former was soon on his way back to the dressing room after Mitchell Johnson found a top edge and Brad Haddin took the catch.

That instigated another batting collapse, as Ballance (7), Jonny Bairstow (0) and Scott Borthwick (4) all departed with just seven runs added to the total in the final session.

Ben Stokes (32) and Stuart Broad offered some resistance, taking England from 95-7 to 139 before the Durham all-rounder went for one slog too many and saw his stumps uprooted by Ryan Harris.

The right-arm fast bowler then took the wickets of Broad (42) and Boyd Rankin (0) to ignite wild celebrations among the men in baggy green caps.
