Steve Smith ready to take over as Australia captain

Steve Smith wants Australia captaincy

Steve Smith has admitted that he wants take over as Australia captain following the Ashes series this summer.

Current skipper Michael Clarke has announced that he will stand down after the series, and Smith, who is the current vice-captain, is the favourite to take over.

The 26-year-old captained the side against India last year and has promised an aggressive approach.

He is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News: "I got a taste of it last summer and really enjoyed the role. I guess if it happens now, then fantastic. We'll wait and see how it all pans out.

"I think I'll be quite aggressive and try to be as proactive as possible. I think that is pretty important.

"For me, it's about trying to lead from the front as a player as well. The captain has got to do that and I know it was something Michael was very strong on – I'll take that same road as well."

The fifth Ashes Test takes place at The Oval next week.
