Smith to replace Clarke as Aussie captain

Cricket Australia have confirmed that Steven Smith will become Australia's Test captain when Michael Clarke retires at the end of The Ashes.

Clarke, 34, is stepping down and retiring from international cricket after next week's fifth and final Test, with England having already sewn up victory as they lead 3-1.

"When Michael made his decision to retire last week it was a very straightforward decision for us to nominate Steve as his successor," Australia selector Rod Marsh told reporters.

"He has big shoes to fill but everything about him suggests he is the right man for the job. At 26, he is a fine young man with extraordinary talent, excellent leadership qualities and a terrific temperament."

David Warner has been named Smith's vice-captain.
