Michael Clarke baffled by Australia defeat at Edgbaston

Australia captain Michael Clarke struggles to explain how his team lost the third Ashes Test inside three days at Edgbaston.

Australia captain Michael Clarke has admitted that he is baffled by his team's defeat to England in the third Ashes Test.

Following their dominant victory over the hosts at Lord's to level the series at 1-1, the tourists were beaten inside three days at Edgbaston as England regained the initiative with two matches left to play.

"It's very hard to explain, Clarke told BBC Sport. "Credit has to go to England, they bowled well on day one and we didn't bat anywhere near we'd have liked.

"It is as simple as we need to make more runs as a unit and execute better with the ball. I was happy with the way the tail wagged this morning and fought hard. That is a good sign and something we need to do more of.

"The spirit is good. I couldn't be happier with the preparation. It is not as simple as saying one man is to blame. We need to try our best and that is what this team is doing."

The fourth Ashes Test gets underway on August 6 at Trent Bridge.
