Olympic boxer avoids jail for pub attack

Olympic boxer Fred Evans has avoided jail for an attack that left a man with a broken jaw.

The London 2012 silver medallist punched friend Michael Wilson during a fight at a Gloucestershire pub.

Despite Judge Jamie Tabor QC stating that Evans "deserved" a spell in prison, the Great Britain competitor was instead handed a suspended two-year sentence during a court hearing on Thursday afternoon.

It was suggested that a jail term for the punch, which left Mr Wilson hospitalised for four days, would prove "devastating" for the boxer's career.

Evans finished runner-up in the welterweight category at the last Olympic Games to claim silver for Team GB.
