Professional boxers suffer defeat at Olympics

Defeats for both Carmine Tommasone and Amnat Ruenrong have ensured that no medals will be won by a professional boxer.

In the build-up to the Olympic Games, a decision was made to allow fighters in the paid ranks to compete in Rio de Janeiro, and Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam, Tommasone and Ruenrong all opted to try to win gold in Brazil.

On Saturday, former world middleweight title challenger N'Jikam was easily beaten by Brazil's Michel Borges and on Tuesday, the two remaining pros were also eliminated from their respective competitions.

Tommosone - an unbeaten Italian featherweight - lost convincingly to Cuba's Lazaro Jorge Alvarez while Ruenrong - a former world flyweight champion - was stopped by Sofiane Oumiha.
