Deontay Wilder's opponent named for next defence of WBC heavyweight title

Wilder opponent named for return to ring

Andrzej Wawrzyk has been named as the next opponent for WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.

The American has not fought since June after requiring hand and biceps surgery after his win over Chris Arreola, and it had been suggested that he could face Hughie Fury.

However, with Fury also having options down the WBO route, a deal has been agreed for the 31-year-old to face Polish-born Wawrzyk.

He has won 33 of his 34 fights as a professional, with his one defeat coming against Alexander Povetkin when he challenged for the WBA belt in 2013.

Wilder has spoken of a potential unification bout with either Anthony Joshua or Wladimir Klitschko should he get past Wawrzyk.
