Derry Matthews vs. Anthony Crolla voted domestic fight of year

Derry Matthews's draw with Anthony Crolla has been voted domestic fight of the year at the British Board of Boxing Control awards on Monday evening.

Liverpudlian Matthews fought Crolla on home turf as they scrapped to a stalemate at the Liverpool Echo Arena in March this year, and their bout was recognised for its entertainment value by scooping the Contest of the Year award at the ceremony in London.

Matthews also won the Sportmanship of the Year gong, and the Commonwealth Lightweight champion expressed his surprise at the double win.

Matthews told the Liverpool Echo: "I wasn't expecting any awards and won two. Thanks to my coach (Danny Vaughan) for putting the time and effort into me because without him I wouldn't be the fighter I am today to win these awards."

Matthews will cap off a successful week by getting married on Thursday.
