Paulie Malignaggi wants to fight Ricky Hatton in Brooklyn in October, following rumours that the British former world champion is ready to return to the ring.

WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi has said that he wants to fight Ricky Hatton in Brooklyn in October.

'The Hitman' beat Malignaggi in 2008 and the American says that he would love to set the record straight.

Rumours have suggested that Hatton, who retired following a knockout defeat to Manny Pacquiao in 2009, has been back in the gym and is ready to return to the ring.

"I am trying to find out if the rumours are true," Malignaggi told BoxingScene. "If they are then of course I am interested. It's always nice to go back and avenge your losses."

Hatton knocked out the fast-talking New Yorker in the eleventh round of their previous fight but was unable to beat welterweight kings Pacqiuao and Floyd Mayweather.

Malignaggi says that he was having trouble behind the scenes when he faced Hatton and is confident he would be victorious in a second fight.

"There is just no way Ricky Hatton can beat me," he continued. "I say that respectfully.

"He did his thing. He was an iconic figure in boxing but I eat those styles up. If you watched me throughout 2008, it was sub-par.

"It was an inner team problem that I should have fixed long before the Hatton fight."

Malignaggi went on to propose a third fight, in England next year to "settle the trilogy".

It is unknown whether Hatton wants to lace up the gloves again again but the Manchester fighter has always maintained that he did not want to end his career on a loss.
