Marcos Maidana gives up WBA light-welterweight title

Marcos Maidana has given up his WBA light-welterweight title after admitting that he can no longer make the 140lb weight limit.

The Argentine is a two-time world champion at the weight having only suffered three defeats, including an epic loss to British fighter Amir Khan.

Maidana will now move up to the 147lb welterweight division and is scheduled to fight Jesus Soto Karass on September 15.

The WBA have said that they have received a request that the fight be a title eliminator.

That means whoever wins the fight will be guaranteed a shot at WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi.
