Frank Bruno announces boxing return

Frank Bruno announces his intention to take to the ring again 20 years after his last professional bout.

Frank Bruno has announced a surprise return to boxing at the age of 54.

The former heavyweight champion last took to the ring 20 years ago in Las Vegas, where he was defeated by Mike Tyson to take his career record to 40-5.

Speaking on ITV's This Morning, Bruno said: "I've been in the gym all the time, that's why I want to come back into boxing. I'm going back into boxing as well."

Asked by host Phillip Schofield if that was a good idea, he replied: "I haven't got a choice. I train every day. I can't sit down and let these so called promoters say Anthony Joshua can knock me out in two rounds when I'm not even dead.

"God rest his soul Terry Wogan, very, very diamond special guy but I can't sit down and let these so called promoters say their guy would beat me in two rounds. I'm not going to let them mug me off.

"I've been in a coma 20 years training every single day. It's my job, it's my profession. You're good at your job, I'm good at my job."

Bruno has been battling bipolar disorder for the last decade and is unlikely to be granted a licence by the British Boxing Board of Control.
