James DeGale relinquishes his European crown in order to concentrate on winning a world title.

British super-middleweight James DeGale has given up his European title, in order to focus on winning world honours.

DeGale, who won an Olympic gold medal in 2008, acquired the European belt in October 2011 after beating Piotr Wilczewski.

He defended it twice before beating Fulgencio Zuniga earlier this month, to win the WBC silver belt, moving him closer to a world title shot.

"It has been a real honour to be EBU champion and it's a shame I've had to choose between the two," said DeGale.

"However, I feel my decision to relinquish the European belt is the right decision at this stage in my career.

"I've won it and defended it twice and I feel the best course of action is to defend my WBC belt on route to a world title. The WBC belt gives me a wider choice of world-class opponents."

DeGale recently spoke about the possibility of fighting Carl Froch, but nothing has been officially announced yet.

The 26-year-old will next fight in January against Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye.
