Washington Wizards earn victory to lead Indiana Pacers

Wizards take series lead against Pacers

The Washington Wizards recorded a 102-96 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Monday night to claim a win in the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 1982.

After storming into the lead in the opening quarter, Washington were forced to show their defensive qualities as they caused an upset on Indiana's home court.

The Wizards were leading by 13 points heading into the second period, and the two sides then evenly shared 56 points before the break to ensure the visitors held the advantage.

Despite hitting back after the interval to reduce the deficit, the Pacers continued to struggle in the rebound department as Marcin Gortat impressed with 12 points and 15 rebounds.

Bradley Beal produced his best form in a crucial stage of the contest as he contributed 14 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter.

The Pacers threatened to force a dramatic finish when George Hill's three-point effort closed the gap to five points, but Washington held on to take a 1-0 lead in the series ahead of the second game on Wednesday.
