Nick Young tears ligament in right thumb

The Los Angeles Lakers are dealt a blow as last season's top scorer Nick Young tears the ligament in his right thumb during practice on Friday.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been dealt a pre-season blow following the news that Nick Young has torn a ligament in his right thumb.

It is unclear how long the guard will be out of action for, but the team is to send Young for surgery on the injury on Monday.

The ligament was torn on Friday as LA's leading scorer last season jammed his thumb into the arm of Kobe Bryant when trying to steal the ball in practice.

Young scored an average of 17.9 points per game last season, with the player mostly appearing off the bench.
