Pistons appoint Stan van Gundy

The Detroit Pistons have named Stan van Gundy as their new coach and president of basketball operations.

The 54-year-old, who is believed to have signed a five-year deal with the NBA side, will be officially presented at a press conference tomorrow.

"Stan is a proven winner in our league," Pistons owner Tom Gores said in a statement. "He instills his teams with passion, purpose and toughness. He is a great teacher who will help our players grow and develop."

He becomes the full-time successor to Maurice Cheeks, who was relieved of his duties midway through the season in February.

Van Gundy has been without a job since he was sacked by the Orlando Magic two years ago. He spent five years with the Magic and previously coached the Miami Heat.

The Golden State Warriors were also said to be interested in taking on Van Gundy as their coach but reportedly didn't offer him as much control of basketball operations as Detroit.
