England's William Smith: 'I achieved my Commonwealth Games target'

William Smith says that taking part in the Commonwealth Games has been a "fantastic experience", despite narrowly missing out on a medal in the T54 1,500m final.

England's William Smith has declared himself happy with his progress at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, saying that it has been a "fantastic experience".

The 18-year-old finished fifth in the T54 1500m final last night at Hampden Park, completing the race less than a second-and-a-half behind Canada's Alex Dupont who took bronze.

"It was a bit wet out there but coming into the Championships my main target was to qualify through to the final and that is what I did," Smith is quoted as saying by the East Anglian Daily Times.

"It was tactical in the final so I was able to hold my own and stay in the pack for a lot of it but the top guys just have the sprint on me at the moment. I am just looking to progress at this stage but to be at Commonwealth finals is a fantastic experience."

England's David Weir won gold in the event.
