England's Avery "never expected" PB in 10,000m

Team England distance runner Kate Avery has revealed her delight at running a personal best in the women's 10,000m at the Commonwealth Games tonight.

The 22-year-old finished fourth in the race at Hampden Park after a tense final few metres in which she came from behind to just edge ahead of Scotland's Beth Potter. In the process Avery recorded a new PB of 32:33.35, shaving around 12 seconds off her own record.

"I am [delighted]," she told Sports Mole afterwards. "Running in a championship race, I didn't have any times in mind, especially as it was so up and down with the pace, they were yoyoing! I never expected to run a PB. But it's another bonus."

Asked where she found her last-second burst of energy, she replied: "I wanted to beat Beth!"

Three Kenyans - Joyce Chepkirui, Florence Kiplagat and Emily Chebet - took the top three spots in the race with just over a second separating the trio.
