Ashley Bryant hails "fantastic" John Lane rivalry

England's Ashley Bryant believes that the friendly rivalry between him and compatriot John Lane is a positive thing for both decathletes.

Team England's Ashley Bryant has insisted that it is "fantastic" to have a friendly rivalry with compatriot John Lane in the decathlon at the Commonwealth Games.

Both athletes are still in with a shout of medalling at Hampden Park, with Lane second and Bryant fourth in the standings at the halfway stage.

Bryant believes that it is a positive to have more than one representative of Team England pushing each other to new heights, and hinted that the future is bright for English decathlon.

"Rivalry is fantastic for us boys. Decathlon, for a few years now, has not been where it was since Dean [Macey] and Daley [Thompson]. It's great to have so may Brits coming in and competing well," he told Sports Mole.

"The standard keeps on rising, then it can only push the ones at the top on. I'd rather have John pushing me all the way. Of course I want to win, that's why we do this sport, but I'm also incredibly glad that he's doing so well and pushing everyone on with us."

Bryant will take part in the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500m tomorrow as he looks to earn himself a place on the podium.
